Sumo took its first steps in Azerbaijan in 2005. At that time, Samir Abdullayev represented Azerbaijan for the first time in an international tournament and won a medal. And in 2006, two tournaments for adults and children were organized together with the Baku City Youth and Sports Department.
2007 was significant for the history of Azerbaijan Sumo. First, the federation was officially registered with the Ministry of Justice. Then he was elected a full member of these organizations at the congresses of the European Sumo Federation in Budapest, Hungary, in June, and the International Sumo Federation, held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in November.
Azerbaijan Sumo Federation has been holding Azerbaijan and Baku championships and championships every year since 2007. At the same time, events are organized in the regions. For several years now, a team of girls of different age groups has been formed, and they regularly participate in domestic competitions and successfully represent Azerbaijan in international competitions.
Our athletes have won more than 200 medals in official international competitions. One third of these medals are gold. The national anthem of Azerbaijan has been sung in many countries of the world.
Samir Abdullayev has been the president of the Azerbaijan Sumo Federation since 2007. He is also the vice-president of the European Sumo Federation since 2012.
